He said he hasn’t the words to explain how honored he feels
The Cooperstown legend, Juan Marichal, said yesterday he feels very grateful and honored by the dedication in his name of the 58th Caribbean Series. “Thank you everyone and to the authorities that made this recognition possible”.
“My sincere thanks and gratitude” Marichal said. “I am enjoying this honor fully. In this stadium, the Estadio Quisqueya was where I made my first pro pitch in October 1957, and to come back to receive this honor means the world to me”.
Marichal was the first Dominican ever to be exalted in the Cooperstown Hall of Fame in 1983.
He debut in the Major Leagues on July 19th 1960 and retired on April 16th 1975.
He pitched for 16 years in the MLB, from 1960-1975, with a record of 243-142 and a 2.89 effectiveness record, with the San Francisco Giants, Boston Red Sox and Brooklyn Dodgers. He won 20 games or more in six different seasons. He led victories in the Major Leagues in two campaigns (25 in ’63 and 26 in 1968).
Juan Francisco Puello Herrera, president of the Caribbean Baseball Confederacy, highlighted the qualities of Marichal, during the inaugural ceremony, by pointing out he is an exceptional human being.
“To distinguish an exceptional human being like Juan Marichal is always an honor” Puello Herrera said.
